Working on farms

Working on farms is a great way to see Australia and make some great memories and lifelong friends.

Please be aware that there are a number of pest and diseases that occur in one state and not another. The fruit and vegetable growers in each state are relying on anyone planning to take fresh fruit and vegetables across borders to be aware of what’s allowed and not allowed.

If in doubt throw it out, or call 1800 064 881 or the contact numbers in your destination state for advice on what can and can’t be moved around the country with you.

It’s not just fruit and vegetables: pests and diseases can also travel on muddy boots, clothes and hats. If you make sure you clean anything that you have worn on one farm before moving onto another, you’ll be doing you bit to protect the industry.

The fruit and vegetable growers of Australia thank you for your valuable contribution.

Enjoy our beautiful country and have a great time!

Biosecurity for farm workers fact sheet

The Biosecurity for farm workers fact sheet has been produced to accompany the videos.

While you are working on farm in Australia there are a few simple things you can do to prevent the spread of plant pests and diseases.

Clean shoes
Thoroughly clean your shoes before entering or leaving a farm to remove dirt and plant material that might carry pests and diseases to a new location.

Dispose of fruit and vegetables
Throw away or eat fruit, vegetables and other plant material like flowers before moving to work on a new farm.

Wash clothes and hats
Wash any clothes and hats worn on farm before moving onto another. Also check your clothing, hair and hats for seeds and other plant material caught in them.

Clean out tents
Clean and sweep out tents before moving on to your next stop.

Clean vehicles and equipment
Clean your equipment and vehicles between properties. Remove all soil and plant material then wash, disinfect and dry.

Ask for help
Speak to the farm manager or your supervisor if you are not sure what to do. They can give you guidance and let you know if there are any specific requirements for their property.
