Help Callum keep south Australia fruit fly free

A passionate and proud South Australian, one of Masterchef Australia’s most successful contestants Callum Hann wants everyone, both locals and visitors, to play their role in keeping South Australia fruit fly free.

“One of the great things about South Australian produce is our diversity and reputation across Australia and in many parts of the world as having some of the best food and wine,” he said.

“An important part of that premium food and wine reputation is the fact that we are the only Australian mainland state to enjoy a fruit fly free status and this does provide significant benefits to our producers, particularly in export markets.”

South Australia’s fruit fly free status ensures the protection of the state’s commercial production of fruit and vegetables including wine grapes and almonds, particularly in the Riverland region. In 2013-14, the estimated farm-gate value of the state’s horticultural produce vulnerable to fruit fly infestation, including wine grapes and almonds, was $900 million.

“As you can see food is very important to South Australia’s economy but it is also very important culturally to us as well so that is why I believe it is vital we all do what we can to keep our fruit fly free status,” Callum said.

Since his Masterchef days, Callum has co-founded the popular Sprout Cooking School and is also a South Australian Government Premium food and Wine from our Clean Environment ambassador. He relishes the chance to promote South Australian food and wine when travelling.

“For me I find the fact that we enjoy this fruit fly free status really does help me to promote all our wonderful premium food and wine,” he said. “I think it provides a bit of a trust factor with our produce and makes people realize that South Australian food and wine is consistently of high quality.

“So if you are travelling into South Australia, particularly our Riverland region and you do have fruit and vegetables with you please eat it, bin it or declare it!”
